Moray Golf Club, Scotland

Moray Golf Club, located along the North Sea in Lossiemouth, Moray, Scotland, is home to 36 holes of links-style golf. The golf club is laid out as two separate 18-hole designs, the Old course and the New course.

Swan Golf Design (SGD), an independent golf course architecture firm, recently announced that it will begin work on the historic Scottish venue this fall.

The Old course was founded in 1889 and is considered one of the finest links courses in Scotland. Designed by Old Tom Morris, the highly regarded “original greenskeeper,” the course is known for its incredible length, with seven par-4 holes reaching more than 400 yards, stone-bordered sand traps, and greens that run smooth and fast, according to SGD representatives.

Henry Cotton’s design of the New course, which was designed and built in the 1970s, features a shorter length, narrow fairways and small-scale greens, truly testing the golfer’s precision. Both courses have been host to several amateur and professional tournaments in years past, granting the club a meaningful name in the golf industry.

A strong reputation comes with high expectations, which is why these courses are partnering with SGD to upgrade and fit the modern expectations of both the golfers and the equipment. Their goal: to stay relevant now and long into the future.

“If golf clubs in a challenging market such as the UK are to sustain their commercial value and profitability, they take a long-term view of the most important asset they have: the golf course,” said Howard Swan, architect for family-owned SGD, in a press release about the project.

A family tie between SGD and Moray Golf Club dates back to the 1960s. Howard Swan’s father Alex Swan laid out the New course with Henry Cotton.

“We are delighted to have the chance to head to Scotland to work with such historically important golf clubs and golf courses,” Howard Swan said, “particularly because of the long family association with the Moray Golf Club.”
