The annual bluegrass weevil (ABW) has been the most destructive insect pest of short-mown turfgrass in northeastern North America for more than 50 years. In the last three years, ABW populations have been on the move with new detections in Louisville, KY, southern Indiana, and Wisconsin, highlighting the potential for movement of the insect into new regions through accidental introductions. In the epicenter of the weevil’s distribution (metropolitan New York) turfgrass mangers struggle to manage populations from reaching damaging levels. Often multiple chemical applications are need throughout the year to avoid turf loss. Furthermore, the advent of pyrethroid resistance in some populations has created even more challenges to controlling the insect through insecticides. In this presentation I will provide an overview of a new chemistry to the turfgrass industry. Novaluron (Suprado) is an insect growth regulator that inhibits larval development. The latest research that is being conducted at Penn State University on the larvicidal- as well as non-lethal effects on adults will be covered. The talk will cover insecticide trial results and laboratory data.

Speakers: Dr. Ben McGraw, Associate Professor Penn State University, Ian Rodriguez, Ph.D Technical Service Manager Quali-Pro
