Fabrizio to receive highest honor at Carolinas GCSA Conference
Mike Fabrizio, CGCS at Daniel Island Club in Charleston, S.C., will be presented with the Distinguished Service Award from the 1,800-member Carolinas GCSA.
Fabrizio, a prior president of the association, will receive the award during the Carolinas GCSA’s annual Conference and Trade Show in Myrtle Beach, S.C., held Nov. 17-19.
The award comes on the 25th anniversary year of Hurricane Hugo devastating Wild Dunes Resort on Isle of Palms, where Fabrizio was working in 1989. He helped nurture Wild Dunes from construction from 1980 to 1983.
“Hurricane Hugo took a lot of wind out of my sails,” says Tom Fazio, who designed both the lauded Links course and its sister layout the Harbor course.
In 1994, Fabrizio took a job at Sapphire Lakes Country Club in the mountains of western North Carolina.
“I never had the privilege to work for Mike, but I have had the privilege of working in the same area as him,” says Carolinas GCSA’s director, Rob Daniel, CGCS at River Towne Country Club in Charleston, S.C. “The consensus amongst a lot of guys in this area is that none of us would be where we are in our careers without his help or influence.”
Fabrizio again worked with Fazio on the first course at Daniel Island and with Rees Jones on a second course, which was home to the now Web.com Tour Championship for three years. He has also worked with Jack Nicklaus.
