Course of the Week: Stowe Country Club unveils reimagined 18-hole course

Stowe Country Club, a historic cornerstone of Vermont’s golf community, is completing a multi-year, full-course redesign led by golf course design firm Beau Welling Design (BWD). The reimagined course unveiled its full 18-hole layout (par 71) on July 1, 2026, nearly a year after the front nine redesign was finished.
The redesign includes all 18 holes, with a focus on walkability, playability for all levels of players, resource sustainability and distinctive golf shot options throughout the course. Enhancements include the reconstruction of greens and tees, reshaping and regrading of fairways, modernization of bunkers using the Better Billy Bunker system and the introduction of a new golf facilities area. A full re-grassing program presents premium bentgrass across greens, tees and fairways, complemented by Kentucky bluegrass and fescue roughs, while updated irrigation and drainage systems ensure long-term course health and environmental stewardship.
“The transformation of Stowe Country Club represents a meaningful investment in both the game of golf and the future of the Stowe community,” said Sam Gaines, president of Mt. Mansfield Company, owner of Stowe Country Club. “This project honors the history of the course while reimagining it for the next generation, creating a place where members, guests and local residents can gather to enjoy the landscape, the sport and the shared experiences that define this region.”
Located in Stowe, Vt., with a view of the Green Mountains, the course sits on the historic grounds of the former Le Liberté dairy farm, dating back to the early 20th century. Stowe Country Club has long served as a cornerstone of the local community and pairs its strong sense of place with one of Vermont’s most comprehensive practice facilities, supported by personalized instruction from an experienced team of PGA professional staff.
Guided by Welling’s design philosophy, the renewed course emphasizes approachable play for golfers of all ages and abilities while maintaining a thoughtful challenge for more experienced players. Expanded fescue landscapes, a long-term tree management plan and refreshed sightlines further highlight the property’s natural beauty.
“From the outset, our goal was to create a course that feels true to its setting while enhancing the overall playing experience,” said Beau Welling. “By working with the land’s natural movement and refining its existing character, we’ve shaped a layout that offers greater variety and flexibility, making it engaging and enjoyable for players of all levels.”

Complementing the golf experience, Stowe Country Club offers dining at The Pub, a member-focused gathering space with modern interpretations of traditional fare with an emphasis on chef-driven barbecue-inspired cuisine. The Pub is designed as a relaxed social hub and features indoor and outdoor dining, including a patio and scenic deck. Other enhancements include a new comfort station, the “Sugar Shack,” accessible from both the fifth and 14th holes, offering restrooms, a member honor station and food and beverage service during peak times.
Together with The Mountain Course at Spruce Peak, the completion firmly establishes Stowe as one of New England’s premier 36-hole golf destinations, offering a dynamic and varied playing experience within one of the region’s most celebrated mountain destinations.
The redevelopment represents a broader vision for Stowe as a premier four-season mountain destination, with future plans such as a new clubhouse, expanded dining, racquet sports, fitness and wellness amenities and additional recreational offerings. Access to Stowe Country Club is available to Stowe Country Club members, members of The Club at Spruce Peak and guests staying at The Lodge at Spruce Peak and affiliated residences, providing an opportunity to experience two otherwise private 18-hole courses within one destination. The Club at Spruce Peak offers memberships that grant access to both golf courses, along with a spa and fitness center, pools, year-round dining, recreation amenities and member programming across the broader Spruce Peak community. Separate memberships exclusively for Stowe Country Club are also available.
“We’ve been thrilled by the response to the reimagining of Stowe Country Club and the continued evolution of club life at Spruce Peak,” said Michael Harger, general manager of Stowe Country Club and The Club at Spruce Peak. “Since announcing the transformation, we’ve welcomed more than 200 new members across Stowe Country Club and The Club at Spruce Peak.”
The Lodge at Spruce Peak offers a seamless stay-and-play experience, combining premier course access with the broader amenities and year-round experiences of the Spruce Peak community.
