Course of the Week: Glacier Club, Durango, Colo.

Glacier Club in Durango, Colo., is a private club certified by the Audubon Society and sits next to 3 million acres of National Forest, featuring the San Juan Mountains as a backdrop.

The 1,000-acre club, which opened in 2004, offers indoor and outdoor activities year-round. Elk, golden eagles, deer, hawks, and other native wildlife can be seen in the course’s surrounding mountains, lakes and streams.

The club has three nine-hole courses: Hermosa, Cliffs and Glacier. A fourth course designed by Hale Irwin Golf Design is underway and will open in spring 2016. The courses are managed by Mark Hanson, director of golf maintenance.

“The views are absolutely spectacular,” Irwin says about the site of the new course. “There’s not one bad look anywhere. In the design process we wanted to make every hole a painting, each uniquely different and pleasing to the eye.”

The Golf Academy runs a full schedule of clinics at the club, including TPI-based assessments and Flightscope Launch Monitor Technology.

Glacier Club is currently offering a “discovery package” through the end of 2015, which includes a round of golf on the existing Arthur Hills-designed signature course.
