Virginia Tech Turfgrass Research Classic & Field Day brings in more than $50K

The Virginia Tech Turfgrass Research Classic & Field Day raised more than $50,000 for turfgrass research on May 25.

The third annual event took place on May 25 at Independence Golf Club in Midlothian, Va. It was cosponsored by the Virginia Chapter Golf Course Superintendents Association of America and the Virginia Turfgrass Council.

About 160 people attended the field day portion of the event in the morning. Turfgrass professors performed research on different strains of grasses, with displays on the fairways and greens of Independence Golf Club’s nine-hole par-3 course.

The tournament, which took place in the afternoon, saw about 120 participants.

The first place low-gross winners included:

Independence GC – Will Sexton, Randy Fisher, Dan Taylor, Giff Breed

The first place low-net winners included:

VGM/Revels/Finch – Jeff Whitmire, Jay Wade, Jeff McMackin, Jeff Holliday
