Toro, Wyland Foundation present water conservation award

By |  July 7, 2014

toroThe Toro Co. and the Wyland Foundation honored Mayor Matthew Harper, his staff and the residents of Huntington Beach for their recent victory in the 2014 National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation on June 6 at Pier Plaza in Huntington Beach, Calif.

The challenge, held every April, is a non-profit competition that asks U.S. city leaders to inspire their residents to commit to reducing water and energy usage through a series of informative, online pledges at mywaterpledge.com.

The National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation incentivizes residents across the country to use water wisely and be vigilant about what goes down the drain and into their local watershed. For this year’s challenge, over 23,000 people across the nation pledged to take 277,742 actions to change the way they use water at home and in the community. Cities with the highest percentage of residents who make these conservation pledges are entered to win over $50,000 in prizes, including water-saving home irrigation prizes from Toro.

Residents of Huntington Beach, the winning city in the “mid-size” city category, agreed to reduce water waste by 35 million gallons, waste sent to landfills by 893 million pounds, cut greenhouse gas emissions by 133 million pounds and eliminate more than 4,300 pounds of hazardous waste from entering local watersheds.

“As 2013 was one of the driest years on record and with our state’s emergency drought situation,” says Mayor Harper, “it is ever more important to not waste water and take extra measures to conserve.”

The challenge comes at a time when population growth, extreme weather patterns, water shortages and aging infrastructure threaten access to a steady, sustainable supply of water in the United States.

Toyota, the U.S. EPA, National League of Cities, the U.S. Forest Service, Wondergrovekids.com, Bytelaunch.com, and Water Smart Software provided additional support for the challenge.
