Thought blasts from Monday night of PGA Champ week
Well, apparently that 5-Hour Energy Drink I took at 8 a.m. was extra-strength, because it’s still working at 2 a.m… so, time for some thought blasts:
- Only talked to one golfer about conditions today (Martin Kaymer) but hopefully that will improve tomorrow. In the meantime, the course will get tougher. Right now the rough needs to grow a little… with some storms predicted and being five days away from the weekend still, it should be tough soon.
- I have a video interview scheduled with Valhalla superintendent Roger Meier for tomorrow morning. We’ll try to get that turned around quickly, and share it with everyone in tomorrow afternoon’s Golfdom Insider, along with a photo parade. If you have any questions you’d like me to ask Roger, shoot them to me via Twitter, @Golfdom.
- I saw the Wanamaker Trophy today. Asked the guys if I could shoot it, they said yes. Just when I was about to ask one of the guys if I could nab a quick photo with it, their boss-man showed up and shooed me away. Some people have no sense of humor…
- No way Tiger plays here this week, right? NO WAY. But I still hope he does…
- Chatted with one of my favorite pro golfers today, fellow Jayhawk Gary Woodland. Asked him if he thought Andrew Wiggins would get traded by Cleveland for Kevin Love. “They have to trade him,” Woodland said. “It’s too bad for Wiggins, but Love is just too good.” BTW, Gary looked solid on the range… someone to watch out for, folks.
- There will be a long drive contest tomorrow, on No. 10. It’ll be the first long drive contest at a PGA Championship since 1984. The prize is a money clip, inspired by one Jack Nicklaus won in a long drive contest in 1963. That year Jack hit a wound golf ball, using a persimmon driver, 341 yards. CRIKEY.
- Meier had good news for the crew tonight… they get about 30 more minutes of sleep tonight. He asked them to be at the course by 5 a.m.
- More soon… better try again to see if I can get some sleep. (The worst thought is that the crew? They’ll be waking up in about two hours from now…)
