Brian Pero

Superintendent — Grizzly Golf and Social Lodge, Mason, Ohio

Brian, what can I get you?

I’ll have a Coke — just a refreshing Coke.

Tell me about Grizzly Golf and Social Lodge.

We are in Cincinnati, Ohio, right across from Kings Island. We were originally owned by them and had Jack Nicklaus’ first golf course there. We’ve hosted the PGA Tour, the Senior PGA Tour and an LPGA major. So, the only other one that I can come up with that’s done that is Pebble Beach. It’s kind of neat to have that history behind you and still be able to play on the same holes.

How long have you been there?

Eighteen years, four as the super. I walked in the door changing cups and then worked my way up.

How did you find the business?

I was originally a PGA (professional) and just got burnt out teaching. I wanted to stay in golf, so I just walked in the door and never looked back. This is the best end of the industry.

Where are you from, and who do you root for?

I’m from Cleveland. I’m a Browns fan and Guardians fan.

Tell me about your family, and what do you do for fun?

My wife Airrell and I share our home with two 6-month-old goldendoodles, Daisy and Petunia. We love exploring new restaurants, and we’re still on a mission to find the best taco spot in town.

Was there anything you saw or picked up on at the Golfdom Summit that stood out?

I need to pay more attention to my water. I do get water tests, just to find out what is in it. We get our water from the river — everybody fishes in it and swims in it, so you think it’s good. In reality, it might have a little bit of something in it. I need to look at that.

What’s the best thing about having your job?

The sunrises. And making something pretty, prettier.

What about when you’re having a tough day at work … what’s the one thing you really depend on to bail you out?

Good people, good family and a happy mechanic.

What’s your all-time golf highlight?

I got to play two holes with Mr. Palmer. And it was at Latrobe, so it was pretty special.

Wow! How did that come about?

I was there for an event, and he just rolled up on me and said, “Would you mind if I joined you?”

How did you do on those two holes?

I don’t even remember. I do remember throwing up in the bushes.
