Superintendent Mike McCormick recognized for leadership during historic U.S. Open at Oakmont

Oakmont’s grounds superintendent, Mike McCormick, CGCS, has been awarded the E.J. Marshall Platter by the United States Golf Association (USGA) following the 2025 U.S. Open, marking a significant acknowledgment of leadership and agronomic expertise in golf course management.
The E.J. Marshall Platter, established in 2022, is presented to superintendents who demonstrate outstanding course preparation and collaboration with the USGA for national championships. This year, McCormick and his team faced heavy spring rains in Pittsburgh, yet delivered championship conditions for Oakmont’s record 10th U.S. Open, a testament to adaptability and teamwork.
McCormick, a member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA), led a 2023 renovation at Oakmont that included expanding greens by 24,000 square feet, renovating 330,000 square feet of bunkers and adding two acres of fairway. During U.S. Open week, his 30-person crew was joined by more than 190 volunteers, reflecting the scale of operations required for major championships.
The award’s namesake, E.J. Marshall, played a pivotal role in the formation of the USGA Green Section, which continues to influence agronomic standards nationally. McCormick’s recognition highlights the evolving demands on superintendents and the importance of collaborative efforts between clubs and governing bodies to meet championship expectations.
As climate variability and tournament standards continue to challenge golf course managers, Oakmont’s example underscores the value of innovation, teamwork and industry partnership. Superintendents and their teams remain central to the sport’s future, shaping the experiences of players and fans alike.
