Looking for a boost

I’m not a coffee drinker. I hope you’ll forgive me.

I do drink my fair share of energy drinks, though. 5-Hour Energy Drink is my go-to, I actually love that stuff. I almost drink one every day, making me a good customer, but not quite on their Christmas card list yet.

I’m not sure why, exactly — maybe something I tweeted or blogged — but the kind folks at UpTime reached out to me to see if I’d give their product a try. Because when it comes to energy drinks, apparently I’m a taste maker.Screen shot 2015-07-13 at 6.01.02 PM

I said sure, send me some product, I’ll try one next time I’m out of 5-Hour, or next time I’m struggling on the back 9. A few days later a nice box with two of the cans and two dozen of the tablets was on my doorstep.

I tried the drink first. It’s a 12-ounce can, so you’re committed for a few drinks. One of the things I love about 5-Hour is that it’s in a single-shot form — one drink and I’m done. (And yes, after I drink it, I traditionally spike the bottle on the ground like Willem Dafoe playing Green Goblin in Spider-Man.)

They sent both original and sugar free. They were both OK, not great. As far as the energy? Again, OK. Nothing that made me run out to the store to buy more.

I then switched to the tablets. The package suggests, for the maximum strength, to do one tablet for every 100 pounds you weigh. So I took two.

That day I felt like Bradley Cooper in the movie Limitless (but to my wife’s chagrin, I only felt like him and still looked like me.) I rocketed (sorry, had to tie that photo in somehow) through my morning work and was still feeling good all afternoon. No energy crash… a good day in the office!Screen shot 2015-07-13 at 6.05.48 PM

The next day I tried one tablet, and I liked that even better… that made me feel less like I’m energy drink dependent, and more energy drink convenient. (And no, I don’t channel Gary Oldman in The Professional when I take one.)

I haven’t gone through my stash… er, my supply… of UpTime yet, but I could see keeping a bottle around, especially for the days when I’m out of 5-Hour and don’t want to stop by a gas station.

Anyway, I have no idea if these drinks/tablets actually work, or if I’m just a sucker. It all might be just in my head. But like I’ve said before… if Jim Furyk is convinced, that’s good enough for me.
