Eudora, Kansas: A Place Dreams Are Made Of

KU_BasketballWhen some people get to travel for work they go to exotic locations, but my first trip as a Golfdom employee forced me… took me to Eudora, Kan.

I know I shouldn’t complain because I’m lucky to even work for Golfdom. I just never thought of the suburb of Lawrence, Kan., as a must-see location before I started working with Seth Jones.

Seth said he was going to show me the best college town in America, and Columbus is still No. 1 to me, but the college basketball experience is the best I’ve witnessed.

Seth and I had tickets for the KU basketball game on Jan. 19 against Oklahoma, and Bill Irving, superintendent at Lawrence CC, and Jim Goodrich, product manager at PBI/Gordon, joined us. Allen Fieldhouse provides a full college sport experience, a goosebumps-provoking highlight video, the college band blaring fight songs, crazed fans teetering on the edge of elation and anger with every trip across the court and even some cult-like chanting.

The game was relatively close and the Fieldhouse was rocking from start to finish with the Jayhawks coming out on top. I have seen some very good Ohio State basketball teams while in school, but the atmosphere in the gym that night was the wildest I’ve been apart of, and I can’t wait to go back.

The game was fun, but the purpose of the trip was not to watch basketball. Seth and I do not have the luxury of working in the same office and we don’t always get to talk about big picture items. This week we were able discuss our ideas and goals for the magazine in 2015 and beyond. After our talk, I am excited for what we have coming for you, the readers, in the upcoming year.

The next step for me is heading back to Cleveland to work on the next issue, but my next business trip will be to San Antonio for the 2015 Golf Industry Show. I look forward to getting out to Texas and meeting as many people as possible.
