A crocodile attacked and killed a man on Dec. 3 at the Skukuza Golf Course on South Africa’s Kruger National Park.

29-year-old Jacques van der Sandt ventured into a dam called Lake Panic at 10 p.m. to retrieve golf balls. He was in waist deep water while reaching below the surface when he was attacked and dragged under, according to the Associated Press report.

“One guy challenged the other to see who can collect the most golf balls,” said Oubaas Coetzer, a police officer.

Van der Sandt’s father is a retired employee and mother currently works at the park. He was described by Coetzer as an avid golfer who grew up in the park and was probably aware of the crocodile’s presence in the dam.
