Beginning in 2018, Love Golf Design consulted with the University of North Carolina (UNC) to upgrade the Finley Golf Course and create a new practice facility for the university’s women’s and men’s golf teams.

The concept was a new building along with a dedicated practice area for the teams within the current footprint of the existing Finley Golf Course property. While studying these options, the team also had to look at the existing course and propose upgrades as the layout was approaching its 25th anniversary.

New improvements include:

  • An updated course layout, flipping the current front and back nines
  • Two new holes on the future front nine
  • A short course and range
  • A new team building and training facility

“The property here is really beautiful and well suited for golf,” Davis Love, III, founder of Love Golf Design, said. “Given the wonderful land, mature trees, and distinct location, we felt there is an opportunity to build something that is really second to none.”

The team of Davis Love, Mark Love and Scot Sherman kicked off the redesign with MacCurrach Golf Construction in October of 2022, with an opening projected for fall of 2023. Looking ahead, the UNC Finley site has been selected to host the 2024 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship Regionals and the 2026 NCAA Women’s Golf Championship Regionals.
