CBS: 36% increase in Sunday PGA Champ viewership

I wrote on Friday seven reasons why I thought this PGA Championship would be a ratings hit for CBS. This morning, the network released some good news: a 36% increase in ratings for Sunday’s final round over the same round in 2013.

Here are the details:

Flags for the tournament.

CBS Sports’ final-round coverage of the 2014 PGA Championship on Sunday, Aug. 10 (3:00-9:00 PM, ET), which saw Rory McIlroy win the Wanamaker Trophy, earned an average household rating/share of 6.0/13, up 36% from last year’s 4.4/10 in the Nielsen metered markets.

This year’s 6.0/13 marks the highest-rated final round in five years (2009; 7.5/17; Y.E. Yang won with Tiger Woods finishing second).

This year’s final-round rating peaked with a 9.2/17 from 8:00-8:30 PM, ET.

CBS Sports’ final-round coverage also was up 54% from 2012’s 3.9/8 when McIlroy won his first PGA Championship.

CBS Sports’ coverage of the 2014 PGA Championship on Saturday, Aug. 9 (2:00-7:15 PM, ET) was the highest-rated third round in five years with an average HH rating/share of 3.2/8, up 7% from last year’s 3.0/8 in the metered markets.  This year’s third-round rating peaked with a 3.8/10 from 5:00-5:30 PM, ET.

The rain delay was a drag, but the tournament itself was excellent. A decorated leaderboard, some fun shots (Rickie Fowler’s second shot on No. 17? Crazy.) and some amazing golf (Rory’s play from off the tee compared to everyone else is a case of chess versus checkers.)

I know I’m in the business of golf… but I’m dying to get out on the course this afternoon!
