Beemer on Valhalla conditions: “Hat’s off to the superintendent”
I got a couple 1-on-1 player interviews today (i.e. not press conference), I’ll try to post them quickly… I’ve got another event I have to hit here in just a few minutes (ahh, the life of a Golfdom Editor-in-Chief…)
This first one is with Rich Beem, winner of the 2002 PGA Championship at Hazeltine.
Take it away, Beemer:
“(The course) is in fantastic shape. It’s long, obviously. I don’t think the rough is too severe, too penalizing. You still got to find the fairways if you want to play well here.
The greens are good. There’s not too much crazy undulation, just subtle undulations that will drive you batty. Everything is rolling great. They’re a little beat-up just because we had a lot of traffic on a Tuesday morning but I expect them to be perfect on Thursday morning…
The golf course is absolutely perfect. I played here Sunday and I played here today, and it’s absolutely ideal. We’re hitting too many practice shots, I wish we were only allowed to hit one shot, one ball per hole. But the golf course is in immaculate shape. Hat’s off to the superintendent, he’s done a tremendous job and I look forward to playing this week.”
