Becker Underwood donates to Wee One Foundation

By |  February 14, 2013

At the Golf Industry Show in San Diego, Becker Underwood demonstrated its altruistic side, presenting the Wee One Foundation with a check for $5,210. The money, raised through a special fundraising promotion Becker Underwood offered on its Transition HC turf colorant last fall, exceeded Becker Underwood’s goal of raising $5,000.

The Wee One Foundation provides financial assistance to superintendents and their family members who are inundated by medical expenses they cannot afford. Since its founding in 2004, it has gifted nearly $600,000 to families in 17 states.

In presenting the award to the Wee One Foundation, Becker Underwood Product Manager Joe Lara said the foundation works hard to help men and women in the industry who “have been through some pretty tough times..And it was our intention at Becker Underwood to support that vision and help spread that vision.”

Luke Cella has served as the foundation’s executive director for the past four years. In hearing the stories of those who benefit from the foundation, he said, he’s learned quite well that “there are no bounds in terms of who needs help.”

Cella said that simply feeling under the weather is hard enough. “But when people are dealing with major catastrophic illnesses and they have to worry about finances and how they’re going to pay their mortgage or make a car payment or something as simple as taking their child to a place for treatment…those are the types of dollars that are spent and those are the types of differences that the Wee One Foundation makes.”

Ultimately, said Lara, the altruism in the golf industry makes it special, “the camaraderie, the genuineness, the support.”
