Cullasaja Club in Highlands, N.C., recently underwent renovations completed by CapillaryFlow. The company replaced the course’s bunkers with Capillary Bunkers.

The club previously renovated its original bunkers in 2004. The old bunkers featured a high, flashed sand line.

“Typically, we get around 90 inches of rain each year,” Tom Nelson, superintendent at Cullasaja Club, said. “When storms come out of the south, they hit the mountains and dump the rain on us – it’s quite common for us to get four to six inches of rain at a time here, and that generally happens several times a year. And following those rain events, bunkers become quite a labor challenge. In the past, it wasn’t uncommon for me to have 90-100 hours of work to get the bunkers back into shape after rain.”

Atlanta-based golf architect Bill Bergin oversaw the project. Work began in mid-October and is expected to wrap up in the middle of April. The course will reopen for the season on May 1.
