Applications now open for Green Start Academy

John Deere Golf and Environmental Science, a division Crop Science, a division of Bayer, opened the application process for the 11th annual Green Start Academy (GSA). Assistant superintendents in the U.S. and Canada looking to advance their careers, hone their skills in critical areas and network with prominent professionals in the field,are encouraged to apply.

The 11th annual Green Start Academy will take place at the Bayer Development and Training Center in Clayton, N.C., the John Deere Turf Care factory in nearby Fuquay-Varina, N.C., and John Deere headquarters in Cary, N.C., on Oct. 19-21. Fifty assistant superintendents will be selected from the applicant pool to participate and will receive an all-expense-paid trip to attend the event.

“Since 2006, Green Start Academy has been renowned for helping assistant superintendents build a strong foundation for their careers,” said Ren Wilkes, marketing manager for John Deere Golf. “The assistant superintendents who go through the Green Start Academy program represent the future of the golf industry, and John Deere is proud to support them along the way.”

Assistant superintendents interested in attending should complete the online application, which also includes submitting a resume and cover letter.

“Each year brings a wealth of highly qualified applicants for Green Start Academy and a new wave of assistant superintendents committed to advancing their careers and to supporting the game of golf. It’s that dedication that continues to inspire the Green Start Academy program,” said David Wells, golf business manager for the Bayer turf & ornamentals business. “We look forward to seeing how this next generation of leaders will grow the industry.”

Consideration is given to all applicants, representing every type of club and course. An independent panel of golf industry experts will select the 50 highest-ranked applicants. Those who are selected to attend will be notified by mid-August. Individuals who are not selected will have the opportunity to take advantage of a professional resume review and critique.

The 2016 GSA judging panel includes:

• Jeff Corcoran, Manager, Golf Courses & Grounds, Oak Hill Country Club;
• Chris Dew, Superintendent, The National Golf Club of Canada;
• Bob Farren, Director of Golf Courses & Grounds, Pinehurst Resort;
• Pat Finlen, CGCS, General Manager, The Olympic Club;
• Lukus Harvey, Director of Agronomy, Atlanta Athletic Club;
• Andy Morris, Golf Course Superintendent, Country Club of Peoria; and
• Billy Weeks, Golf Superintendent, Duke University Golf Club.
