Quick hits from the PBGCSA meeting
It was a great meeting to attend this week at the Rees Jones course at Breakers West. Superintendent Mark Reid and his staff do a great job out there.
Some quick observations:
— PBGCSA prez Steve Wright, CGCS, (Boca West CC) asked all in attendance to stand up, introduce themselves and state how much rainfall they had last week (the area got hit with a major overnight rain event.) Rainfall amounts varied from 22 inches to zero inches… in a relatively close geographic area.
— Curtis Tyrell III, CGCS, MG, director of grounds at Medinah (pictured), gave a great presentation. It was similar to what he did at the Golfdom Summit two years ago but not identical. Perhaps most interesting was the renovation work they took on as soon as the Ryder Cup ended. No rest for that crew!
— I gave the guys a sneak preview of our January issue, along with some results from this year’s Golfdom Report. I also told the guys I wouldn’t be able to return to the area for a couple seasons, as I’ve got a lot of other chapters I need to visit before I get back down there again.
— Funniest moment of the meeting… and it was a doozy: After Wright asked for the guys to give their rainfall totals, the first superintendent (who shall remain nameless to protect the innocent) stands up and reports that he had “a light three inches.” A heartbeat later, a monotone voice came from the back of the room. “That’s what she said.” The entire room busted up. It took us a while to get back on track after that one. Definitely the best use of ‘That’s what she said’ I’ve witnessed in a long time.
A great meeting. Thanks to the PBGCSA again for inviting me down!
