The November Issue and the Newbie

By |  November 14, 2013

Hello there everyone. My name is Molly Gase and I am one of the new additions to the Golfdom team. I got myself settled in the Cleveland office and dove headfirst into Golfdom last week, helping wrap up the November issue. I will tell you all about the newest issue in a moment, but first here’s a little bit about me.

I am originally from the northwest corner of Ohio, where crops are wherever the eye can see. And trust me, the eye can see far because it is incredibly flat in that section of the state. Despite being surrounded by farms, my parents are an English teacher and a retired Athletic Director. I grew up immersed in sports even though I proved to be a sub-par athlete. I love talking about sports, especially baseball, and will defend my Detroit Tigers through thick and thin.

My education includes a bachelor’s degree in English from The University of Akron, where I learned to fear the roo and despise the Miami Heat. After graduation, I went on to a one-year master’s program in Magazine, Newspaper and Online Journalism at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. It was the coldest, snowiest year of my life. Out of school at last, I am jumping into Golfdom and grown-up life.

The November issue of Golfdom speaks to Superintendents who are happy. This month’s cover story is based on a survey completed by 661 readers. The overwhelming outcome…many superintendents are happy just where they are. Check out the article starting on page 20 to see what makes them content. The re-design of Dallas muni, Stevens Park is featured in this month’s magazine. Read about the process start to finish and see how the course was transformed. Within our super science section, we are talking about Bermuda. This piece is sadly not about the tropical vacation spot, but instead focuses on spring dead spot in bermudagrass. The article discusses an effort to find bermudagrasses with a better resistance to spring dead spot.

The digital edition of this month’s Golfdom is available today. Check it out!

GD1113_CV1As a kid, I was always helping my dad work on our high school’s various sports fields. Pulling weeds, fertilizing, putting our blood, sweat and tears into it. He wanted to produce something that he and our community could be proud of. Dad taught me that hard work, getting your hands dirty, is worth it when others get to enjoy the product. Since I have started at Golfdom, I have found that there is so much to learn about superintendents and their work, but I have felt that pride in their work. I am excited to meet more superintendents over the next few months and get to know them.
