The Lawn Institute rolls out new website

The Lawn Institute’s new website offers homeowners, landscapers, sports field supervisors, golf course superintendents and Green Industry professionals access to a wide variety of information on lawn care, the benefits of natural turfgrass and scientific research.

Although the website is still under construction and a continuing work in progress, it is accessible and has already generated plenty of interest.

The site offers visitors answers to countless questions from the most basic to the more complex, such as:

  • Why is a lawn important?
  • What are the benefits of properly maintained turfgrass?
  • How is a lawn good for the environment?
  • How important is the soil in growing turfgrasses?
  •  How long does it take to get a lawn established?
  • How and when should grass be mowed?
  • What is aeration, dethatching or topdressing?
  • What fertilizer is needed for a lawn?
  • What pests bother a lawn?
  • How do I control weeds, insects, diseases or animals that bother my lawn?

For easy navigation, the site offers visitors three areas in which to search for information.

Science

As the internationally recognized authority among turf professionals and scientists, The Lawn Institute monitors, interprets and reports on the latest advances in turfgrass research, landscape horticulture and agronomic science. The Lawn Institute also funds research grants to provide a continuous flow of timely and reliable information and funds scholarships.

Education

This section is already the most popular area on the site.  It provides homeowners and green industry professionals with the “what, why, where and how” of lawn care. Among the topics addressed: Brief history of lawns, establishing a lawn, lawn maintenance, lawn facts and stats, grass plant physiology, types of grasses and species, site preparation, information on soils, best watering practices, etc.

Environment

This section helps anyone that cares about the environment to better understand the environmental, economic, community and human health benefits associated with natural grass. It explains sustainability and how best management practices are beneficial, gives insight into other benefits of lawns such as air quality, erosion control, water purification, carbon storage, oxygen and temperature modification, etc.

Also featured is an extensive Glossary that serves to assist homeowners, students, educators and green industry professionals.
