Texas golf industry drives $14.2B in economic output

The Texas golf industry is proving to be a formidable economic engine, with a new study revealing a $14.2 billion total economic output, support for more than 107,000 jobs and nearly $4.8 billion in labor income. These findings, released by Radius Sports Group and commissioned by the Texas Alliance of Recreational Organizations (TARO), even prompted state legislative leaders to declare May 6, 2025, as Texas Golf Day, recognizing the sport’s statewide influence.

The study highlights a direct economic impact of $7.7 billion, with nearly $1 billion in state and local taxes generated by the golf industry. Texas ranks among the top five states for the number of golf courses, with 821 courses and 706 facilities. Nearly 70 percent of these are open to the public and 38 percent of public facilities are municipally operated — exceeding national averages and underscoring the state’s commitment to accessibility. In 2023, Texas hosted 1.89 million golfers, a figure large enough to fill AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, 23 times.

According to the report, the industry’s focus on inclusivity is evident: Nearly 90 percent of courses offer junior golf programs, over a third support military and veterans through initiatives like PGA Hope, and Texas is home to the nation’s first Urban Golf Park at PGA Frisco, a free, family-friendly facility. The sector also raised more than $362 million for Texas charities through more than 15,000 events in 2023.

Golf’s environmental footprint in Texas is significant, with more than 150,000 acres of green space preserved for wildlife habitats, air quality improvement, urban cooling and flood control. Sustainability practices are widespread: 72 percent of courses implement at least three water conservation measures, 51 percent use recycled water for irrigation and many are adopting renewable energy, electric carts and composting programs.

Since 2012, the Texas golf economy has grown by 74 percent, adding more than 26,700 new jobs. As Texas continues to lead in population and economic expansion, the golf industry is positioned to remain a vital contributor, according to the report.

“Golf in Texas delivers far more than rounds played — it drives jobs, tourism and community impact,” said Ken Gorzycki, president of TARO.

Gib Lewis, former Texas Speaker of the House and TARO Board member, added, “The industry’s focus on accessibility, community and sustainability ensures that golf continues to be a sport for all Texans.”

With robust growth and a commitment to accessibility and sustainability, Texas’ golf industry is poised to shape the state’s economic and social future. For more details, access the full Texas Golf Economic Impact Report here.
