Talkin’ hoops

I’ve got the Clippers/Thunder game on late tonight… let’s talk some hoops.

Most important: How about my Jayhawks taking down the Duke Blue Devils last night? I really thought they were going to lose by 15, after watching the two preseason games and their home opener last week. Was impressed to see them put together such a solid effort.

Michigan State looked good too, huh? There are about two, maybe three situations where I’ll root for Michigan State: when they’re playing 1) Kentucky, 2) Duke or 3) Mizzou. So last night I was cheering on the Spartans.

In other amateur basketball news, I’ve signed up to coach my daughter’s rec league basketball team. I’m excited! This will be her first foray into basketball. My daughter is already 4’4″ and she turns 7 next month. She’s a head taller than most girls in her class.

I’ve coached her soccer team (see photo, my daughter is second from the back) for a couple sessions now, and that was fine. I do enjoy soccer. But I’m a basketball NUT. I’m looking forward to discussing the fundamentals of the game with a bunch of 1st and 2nd graders.

On Saturday we’re having our coach’s meeting. At that meeting we’re drafting our teams. I think this is awesome, that we’re drafting 6-, 7- and 8-year-olds to play basketball.

In my mind, it’s going to be just like my fantasy football draft. I’m planning on bringing a 12-pack. I plan on heckling a couple picks, even though I’ll barely know any of the kids we’re selecting. I’ll do a shot when we’re halfway through the draft. And upon conclusion of the draft, I’m going to start shouting that my final pick was the “Steal of the draft!!!”

It’s going to be a GREAT season!
