Quick hits from Pinehurst
Presented by BASF
Just a few thought blasts before I get out on the course:
- That storm that I was tweeting about yesterday? It never materialized here at Pinehurst. In fact, it split in two and missed Pinehurst No. 2 on both sides! The USGA’s meteorologist was stunned, but when I mentioned this to a local, he told me it’s not rare at all for storms to skirt by No. 2.
- The crew tell me they wouldn’t have minded a little bit of rain last night, about .10. The wind gusts they probably could have done without, though. That put some pine cones and pine needles in the fairways.
- Spoke with the USGA’s Chris Hartwiger yesterday evening. He’s thrilled with the way the greens are looking. He thinks the next four days are going to go by fast. I asked him if he was worried about storms these next four days. “It’s an outdoor game,” he said with a smile. He also mentioned that he got a lot of emails and texts giving him a thumb’s up on his GolfdomTV video. So score one for Golfdom!
- I rode the course yesterday with John Jeffreys and then Kevin Robinson last night. Got a ton of great pics. Look for a few in an upcoming photo slideshow.
- Kevin told me he’s rooting for a playoff. “I’ve got be here anyway,” he laughed.
- Pro golfer sightings at the Pinehurst Resort’s Ryder Cup Room last night? Plenty, including Geoff Ogilvy, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Charl Schwartzel and Lee Westwood.
