David S. Downing II, 55, has been named director of grounds and golf course maintenance for PGA Village in Port St. Lucie, Fla., the PGA has announced. PGA Village is the home club for PGA professionals.
A past president of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) and a veteran with more than 20 years in facility management, Downing took over as director on July 5. The PGA stated in a news release that as director of grounds and golf course maintenance, Downing will lead a course management team overseeing PGA Village’s “three world-class resort and private golf layouts,” including the Ryder, the Wanamaker and the Dye courses; the PGA Center for Learning and Performance; and the private PGA Country Club.
“David Downing represents the best of golf course management in our industry, a career that spans premier facilities and the No. 1 leadership position of the GCSAA,” said PGA of America Chief Executive Officer Joe Steranka.
Downing, who served as president of the GCSAA from 2008 to 2009, said in the release he’s “excited about the opportunity to help grow PGA Village and PGA Golf Club. We will continue to deliver the highest level of service and provide playing conditions worthy of the PGA brand.”
