THE PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass wrapped up the other day with a win by Martin Kaymer.

Behind the scenes, the John Deere Volunteer Program at TPC Sawgrass allowed Clay Breazeale, superintendent, Tom Vlach, director of agronomy, and the entire Sawgrass team to have the support of many volunteers.

These volunteers came from different walks of life to help with the event. The winners of the 2014 GCSAA Turf Bowl, from the University of Maryland, Ryan Higgins, Brian Hogan, Matt Park and Brent Waite participated along with two professors from Horry Georgtown Tech., Charles Granger and Ashley Wilkinson. Granger and Wilkinson were joined by 16 of their students who received some class credit for volunteering.

“It’s really great for them to be able to come down to Sawgrass and have this opportunity, to be on equipment and see it all happening in person when they normally wouldn’t. The essence of our involvement here is to both help our friends at Sawgrass and also benefit from this great educational event,” says Granger.

Approximately 150 volunteers and crewmembers worked on the course to get it ready for the tournament. The fleet of workers was matched with an equally large amount of equipment out on the course. 25 greens mowers, 10 triplexes and about 90 pieces of transporting equipment were utilized at Sawgrass. All equipment was maintained by a team of three technicians under the oversight of Mark Sanford, equipment manager.
