Becker Underwood, Inc., a producer of inoculants and agricultural and horticultural products such as seed coatings and colorants, this month announced it has installed 84 solar panels at its St. Joseph, Mo., facility, making the installation the city’s largest private solar panel array.

The company stated the installation is part of its commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and energy prices. It projects that the panels will help reduce the facility’s carbon dioxide emissions by 789 tons over 25 years and create renewable energy for the site.

According to Daniel Krohn, sustainability lead at Becker Underwood, “Reducing our environmental impact is important to us, because it helps us identify cost saving opportunities…and go above and beyond any regulations that may be affecting the markets we operate in.”

Becker Underwood’s sustainability initiative began just over three years ago, when the company’s CEO thought it could add value to the company. In addition to reducing the company’s carbon footprint, Krohn asserts that, among other things, the renewable energy the solar panels generate will help the company utilize space not used in product manufacturing, such as the roof.
