GCSAA Urges Superintendents to Act Over Methyl Bromide Cancellation

Golfdom

The Golf Course Superintendents Association of America issued an action alert to its members encouraging them to contact their congressional representatives and ask them to press the Environmental Protection Agency to accept the calls for an orderly cancellation of methyl bromide. The EPA is demanding an immediate cancellation of methyl bromide's use on golf courses and has rejected a proposal for an adequate cancellation timetable, the GCSAA stated.

Methyl bromide is a soil fumigant used for the establishment of newly constructed golf courses. It's also used fr course renovations to change from an existing turfgrass to an improved turfgrass species or cultivar. Over the last five years, supplies have been decreasing dramatically as EPA continues to reduce the amount of product that manufacturers can make and sell, according to the GCSAA.

"EPA is demanding a cancellation timetable that does not allow sufficient time for golf facilities to adjust their operations or implement alternatives, the GCSAA said. "Cancellation of golf course use of methyl bromide without an adequate transition period will create an extreme hardship on golf facilities and result in substantial economic impacts.
