Despite the slow economy and a less-crowded trade-show floor, there were plenty of new product introductions at the Golf Industry Show last month in New Orleans. Maybe companies realize that a recession isn't necessarily a bad time for new product debuts.

"The best time to grow your business and gain market share comes when the times are tough," said Gregg Breningmeyer, director of sales and marketing for John Deere Golf, whose company introduced eight products at the show.

Here's some (but not all) of the new product introductions made at the show:

Turfco introduced the new Walking TriWave Overseeder, which combines the features of Turfco's TriWave 60-inch Overseeder in a walking version. In addition to the patented WaveBlade technology, the Walking TriWave Overseeder offers new optional greens blades, new transport speed and patent-pending technology that keeps seed rate consistent regardless of ground speed. Powerful and fast enough to complete projects around the entire course, the new overseeder enables operators to handle all kinds of seed from a bent to a creeping red fescue. Operators can seed while turning, which allows them to make one pass around the collars, seed the greens and approaches or even complete small renovation projects. Turfco also offers the new WideSpin 1540 EC Topdresser, which gives an accurate, wide range of application with fewer adjustments. A spinner design allows operators to dial in the most precise and clean application, whether it's ultra-light or ultra-heavy and everything in between with very few adjustments, according to the company. The simple-to-use electronic controller enables superintendents to lock-in their preferred width and rate of applications ensuring the exact spread they want each time their crew topdresses. Additional features include a patented three-position switch, new rear panel, and new shields. Also, the new WideSpin 1540 spinner angle has increased by 30 percent more up and down giving an even greater range of applications. For more information, contact www.turfco.com.

Jacobsen introduced several new products at the show, including the R-311 wide area rotary mower, designed to give superintendents a productive mower that can maintain a large amount of grass with solid performance, low cost of ownership and reliability, according to the company. The R-311 is maintenance-friendly, allowing access to all of the machines important parts. The beveled blades, the hydraulic motors and the R-311's drive train systems work together to increase fuel economy without sacrificing hill climbing ability, and reduce noise compared to other wide area units while delivering more cutting power, according to Jacobsen. Jacobsen also introduced a line of stronger precision tines for its Greensair series of aerators. The new premium DuraTine XL and ultra premium DuraTine XLT have a performance-enhanced surface that improves the lifespan and the hole-quality of the tines through better abrasion resistance, strength and overall toughness, the company says. Also displayed at the show was an all-electric version of the Eclipse 322 riding greens mower. The Eclipse 322 was designed according to detailed customer evaluations and was validated through an extensive testing program over the last four years to make sure it was exactly what golf maintenance professionals wanted, Jacobsen said. Jacobsen also displayed a new Turf Groomer to fit all Eclipse walking greens mowers. The company also touted that its Classic XP reels now feature Advanced Relief Technology, which significantly extends the life and consistent performance of each reel. BASF Turf & Ornamentals announced that FreeHand 1.75G herbicide and Drive XLR8 herbicide received full state registration in California. FreeHand 1.75G herbicide combines a granular formulation of dimethenamid-P with pendimethalin for time-saving pre-emergent weed control. It is labeled for use in landscape ornamentals maintained areas (residential and commercial), as well as in container, liner and general grounds maintenance in specified noncrop areas. Broad-spectrum Drive XLR8 herbicide features an innovative liquid formulation of quinclorac for postemergent control of the most prevalent weeds, including crabgrass, dandelions and clovers, and can be used on most tolerant cool- and warm-season grasses. The Drive XLR8 liquid formulation offers easier mixing, handling and spraying. It has a use rate of 1.45 ounces per 1,000 square feet and is labeled for use on commercial and residential turf grasses, golf courses, sod farms and sports fields. Turf professionals can tank mix the liquid formulation with Pendulum herbicide and other pre-emergent herbicides for annual grass control, as well as combine it with other postemergent broadleaf products to increase the spectrum of postemergent control, according to BASF. John Deere Golf says its 2009 new product lineup - its largest product launch to date with eight products - draws inspiration from earlier John Deere products, combining existing solutions with new innovations in engineering. The new products include the 220 E-Cut Hybrid Walk Greens Mower, which incorporates the new Quick Adjust Cutting Units with the patented attached to the mower's traction drive system that easily improves course appearance, thanks to its steering capability. This feature also results in less turf stress from clean-up passes. The company also introduced the 7200 PrecisionCut Trim and Surrounds Mower with Quick Adjust cutting units, which allows the operator to change mowing width quickly, even while driving, without tools or additional parts. Available with 26-inch and 30-inch cutting units, the 7200 enables operators to select a cutting width at the touch of a switch. John Deere Golf also rolled out the 7500 and 8500 E-Cut Hybrid Fairway Mowers. Built on the same platform as the PrecisionCut line of fairway mowers introduced in 2008, the E-Cuts are designed with fewer possible hydraulic leak points to protect fairway appearance, according to the company. And then there's the "customer-inspired" 8000 E-Cut Hybrid Fairway Mower, which combines the benefits of John Deere's E-Cut line with its PrecisionCut line and adds the Quick Adjust 5 cutting units. The company also showcased the 8800 TerrainCut Rotary Mower, a powerful, comfortable and easy-to-use mower designed with ground following, quality of cut and quick height-of-cut adjustments in mind; the HD200 and HD300 SelectSpray Series of turf sprayers with a choice of centrifugal or diaphragm pumps, manual or automatic rate controls and boom options that come standard with an electro-hydraulic lift; as well as the Quick Adjust Cutting Units featuring the Speed Link system, which can be adjusted in a few seconds from one point on the cutting unit. Toro says the new features on the Groundsmaster 4500 and 4700 will increase mowing productivity through improved operator comfort and equipment run time. The rotary mowers still feature free-floating Contour Plus cutting units, which follow the turf's contour for a quality of cut. In addition, the rear rollers on the decks provide a striping effect while mowing. Toro also introduced the new Workman HD Series utility vehicles. The new lineup offers towing and hauling capacity, enabling customers to be more productive. Total capacity ranges from 2,835 pounds to 3,002 pounds. Design components on all six models include an I-beam shaped DeDion rear axle, which isolates and protects the engine, transmission and main frame from vehicle loading; a truss-like front space frame for superior torsional rigidity; integrated wheel bearings; and hydraulic disk brakes.
